After reading Callings By Dave Isay I don’t think I’m going to only remember one passage, but if I had to pick I think that the most memorable for me is the one about Ronald McNair. I think that The story of him checking out books at a library really stuck out to me while reading this book. It was a very good example of people working towards their callings and not letting others bring them down. However my favorite passage out of these secretions is what his brother told the author about his brother's first space flight, “Ron went on a space flight in February of 1984. When he went out in space and he looked out at the world, he saw no lines of demarcation. It was a world of peace” (Isay 38).  He was able to do something most of us dream about and would not let others stand in his way. However in his pursuit of greatness he lost his life tragically During in the Challenger Disaster.

I think the best two presentations were Tim, Dave, and Issacs. I think Tim and Dave were able to create a captive presentation about Pharmacy and were able to split primary sources and secondary sources in a way that made sense as an audience member. They also had the best overall layout and did not crowd the slides with words. That also did not read from a script they just went through what they needed to say about each topic. I think Issacs had a very good layout of what he talked about. Instead of picking 3 topics about the job he picked 3 types of taxidermy. I think the way he formatted his slides made them stick out compacted to the rest of us.

            One profile in callings that I never want to forget, or haven't forgotten about since we read it is the Astronomer. Although it is the first passage, I liked it a lot because of how intriguing a job with the same structure would be. Personally, my dream job is something along the lines of working for yourself, having your own schedule along with something that is fun to do. I thought in the works of social media influencer would be the best fit for me, or something that you can show off your personality and work ethic. One quote that got me thinking about this was, "If it looks fake, it's in good focus." Most people take this as the literal way, but I thought of it as my dreams. Someone said if people don't laugh at your dreams then they're not big enough; that's what I interpreted from the quote. I want to do something most people aren't willing to put the effort in to achieve something great. I have high expectations for myself and faith that I can get somewhere close to those expectations at the end of my career. 

                Out of all of the presentations we went through, I remember and favor David and Tim's presentation. I liked this one the most due to the tag team/ teamwork capability they pulled off. Their presentation was neat, and informative. I also envied the interviews that they received from real pharmacists. On Wednesday I enjoyed Michaels presentation because you could tell he was very passionate about his presentation, and had a lot of background knowledge about it. That made his presentation flow very well/ Reflecting back on it, I enjoyed everyone's presentation, but David and Tim's stuck out the most to me personally. Everyone did a solid job and did a well job at the public speaking area too.

This picture represents being your own boss and brand. I have pride in who I am and I believe that you are your biggest asset in life. If you can build that asset to its best potential and build a company, you win.

            The one profile that really stood out to me was Kerry Davis and Ken Hopper. These men looked at their job as more than a job and were able to save lives because of it. It was inspirational to see these men love their jobs as much as they did with the stress that they had to go through as well. Kerry says, “yeah, and there’s a feeling of elation when you finally do connect with them in some way”. When they were finally able to connect with them it made their job fulfilling.

            The first presentation that I really enjoyed listening to was David and Tims. It was obvious to me that they put a lot of time into their project. It was also nice to get two peoples different research on a topic. The slides were all put together nicely and it was easy to follow along with. I also really enjoyed Michaels presentation. He did a good job at showing the different types of weapons and what they are used for. It was also nice to get the background of the guns as well. The slides were easy to follow along with and it was an interesting project to learn about.

This is a picture of the Manhattan Bridge. It would be a beautiful view to work from every day.

Callings is full of so many great profiles, and they have the ability to be so different from each other. From doctors to beer vendors, each job has something unique and unforgettable the reader can take away from the text. The Callings profile that I never want to forget is about Beekeeper Ted Dennard. This profile was inspiring to me because Ted took his hobby, something he loves and is very passionate about, and he made a career out of it. Another inspiring aspect of this profile was that he had so many people doubt him and he goes on to say “You know, my brother is famous for saying, “You can never make beekeeping work as a business ``''(Isay 189).. But, Ted worked hard and found out how to sell honey and earn a living. I never want to forget this profile because I want to be in a position like Ted where my career is something related to my hobbies.

During the presentations this week, we looked at a lot of different careers. There were so many good and interesting ones too. On Monday, I thought David and Tim's presentation was the most effective. They had a good amount of background information for a good exposition and they had unique primary sources that we would not be able to have access to without their interviews. The use of primary and secondary sources allowed for the presentation to be effective and unique. For Wednesday, I thought the most effective presentation was Michaels. This is because he broke his presentation down into the two fields that combine to make the field of weapons engineer. He looked at why people became engineers and why people went into the military. I thought this technique allowed for the most accurate reasons people became weapon engineers. Also, Michael had interest in going into this field and that allowed him to use himself as an example.

Simple hobbies, like Beekeeping, are things that can help us find careers that we will enjoy for the rest of our lives.

For this essay we will discuss one of the most impactful chapters to me throughout Callings, By David Isay. To me the chapter I never want to forget is the Ironworker chapter. The two men, Kerry and Ken both enjoyed their jobs, but there was more. They liked to feel helpful to people who were low added on to the original responsibility of doing their job. Ken even says, “Some people call us Guardians of the Gate, and that’s nice to hear. It feels good.” (Isay 124). These men inspire me to do more than what is required in my job and my daily life.

The next topic we will be discussing is two of the many projects I watched my peers present. Personally, I thought many of my classmates did a great job, so even if they are not on here that doesn’t mean I found it bad. The two that stuck out to me was Judson’s presentation on Neonatal Nursing and Isaac’s presentation on Taxidermy. The reason I picked these two was because they both had so much passion for their topics. Judson used a topic that he was interested in and used videos, online sources and personal experience into his presentation which made it very interesting. Judson’s was the same way. He looked into something he is passionate about and would like to learn a lot more about in his presentation. He was very clear on how broad the career could be and how we could always have a use for the career. All in all these two were very good presentations, it made listening to the presentations very interesting when they had a lot of time put into them like these two.

The profile that I could relate the most and that stuck me the most in Callings is Farmer Johnny Bradley. This profile talks what Johnny’s dad taught him about perseverance and not giving up even in the worst situations. Johnny, thanks to what his father taught him, he was able to pass some crisis in his life and still be successful. He says there is one sentence that his father always used to repeat to him: “Son, you can’t whip a man that don’ quit” (Isay, 91). When I read this sentence, I remember pausing for a minute and thinking of all the times I wanted to quit doing something that would just require a substantial amount of effort, more than expected, but most of the times I have always told myself; you can’t quit, keep going forward, you need to finish this. This sentence that johnny’s father would say perfectly fits what I tell myself when I want to quit from doing something, but it is worded in a much better way. So, after I read this story, I wrote this sentence on a piece of paper and put it on my desk. Now, whenever I am thinking about giving up on something, I read that sentence and I remember how Johnny did not give up, when his farm was in a crisis and he was about to lose everything, and if he made it, that means I can make it too. 

I think the two presentations that were most effective to me were David and Tim’s one and Michael’s one. What I liked about David and Tim’s presentation is that Tim was presenting the description of the job part and David was presenting what his experience co-workers said about the job. I liked how the presentation was divided and organized, it was really easy to follow and enjoyable to listen to.  It was interesting to see how few pharmacists in the country there are and how narrow this job is. The other presentation that affected me the most was Michael’s, he talked about weapons engineering. I really liked the animated imagine of the piston in his presentation, and what he pointed out to us about that in engineering you could get the same result with something with three pieces rather than ten, it just depends what the customer wants and what the weapon is used for. From this presentation I learned that there are different ways to become a weapon engineer, for example you could become one from just getting a degree in mechanical engineering or from being in the army.

Journal Nine by Tim McGuire

     The passage I will never forget is “NBA Referee Marat Kogut, 31, Talks with His Dad, Leon Kogut, 63.” In this short story, Marat will tell us how he came to his passion of being a NBA referee. During his calling at a younger age, his dad always supported him throughout the progress. His mom wasn’t too thrilled with the idea of being a referee because no women would want to marry him. So, Marat mentions this to his father, “How many lawyers do you have in this country, Dad?” I said, “Maybe three, four million?” “How many doctors do we have in this country?” I said, “About six, seven million doctors?” And then you asked, “And how many NBA referees are there in this country?” I said, “I don’t know.” You told me, “It’s about sixty. And I’m going to be one of them.” (Isay 28-29). This is just a powerful quote and great life advice. He doesn’t want to follow what everyone else is doing in life, he wants to take the road less taken. Even if someone doesn’t agree with your choice, follow your dreams. 

     In my opinion, I thought Michael’s presentation was one of the better ones. I enjoyed how he put many pictures throughout his PowerPoint. It kept my attention the whole PowerPoint. I, also, liked how there was barely any words on his PowerPoint. He was able to talk through each slide without needing to look on the PowerPoint. My second favorite was Pietro’s presentation. I liked how he put their stories into the PowerPoint. I could also relate to this one in a way. I don’t really believe in going and taking your cars into shops. I believe they just charge you more than you need to be charged but that is my opinion. So, I end up doing all the work on my car when it needs it. 

This picture is pretty powerful and can relate to my first paragraph. It is someone picking their path for their life. Will he pick his own path or go the way everyone does?
