Journal 4 - David Miller

Today we are going to look into Chapter Ten of One and Done and what the core themes are. To me I thought the most important theme of this chapter was Trust. Within this chapter Clarett gets robbed out of a car that he borrowed, and then files a report but does it in the wrong way. Because he doesn’t do it the right way Andy Geiger decides to get his revenge for Clarett talking back to him earlier in the year, or at least Clarett thinks so because he states, “Geiger called for the investigation. He called the NCAA about this. He gave me up”, (Clarett, 155). But personally I didn’t find the writing around this piece to be the most interesting. I preferred the end of the chapter, around page 162, because it describes to us how he’s feeling about the whole thing. He’s beginning to feel like how he was before football because he is losing everything.

Personally I can’t relate to that a lot. I’ve always had people there to help me even in my lowest lows. One of the biggest examples of these influences in my life has to be my neighbor Kevin. I didn’t know him for a super long time, maybe a couple years, but he constantly encouraged me and my brothers to go over to his house. There would be days that I would get home from school and we would go over there and play chess and talk about my day. Looking back on those memories now I can remember his willingness to listen to a little kid about his day. His wife Cathleen was just as nice as him and prays for my family everyday. Neither of them had to be so nice to use when we were younger, but they chose too. I feel like my situation in life is very opposite of Chapter Ten because unlike him I have had people there supporting me, even early in life.

The chapter that I have connected to the most is “Gil’s Furniture Bought And sold”. 

This is one I can connect to well because I used to go to antic stores and thrift shops with 

both of my grandmothers and Cisneros does a fantastic job of bottling the atmosphere 

of the shops and putting it in the book. In this character  Esperanza and her younger sister 

find a music box that they liked but could not get, they were looking around at what the old 

man has when the little sister fines a music box described as “just a wood box that's old and 

got a big brass record in it with holes”(S. Cisneros 20). The look of the box is not what made 

them want it but the feeling that they got when it played, they felt the music in them. 

I found an old type writer will I was with my grandmother in an antique store. 

I couldn’t get it because I didn't have enough money and then if I did my parents wouldn’t

 let me keep it because I didn't have the room, on top that it probably didn't work so they 

would have thought it useless .I still wanted it though, because when I touched it, it felt 

important, it could have had some cool history that no one could tell.

This is a pine box with some cool burns in it. You could probably buy something like this for 20$.   

   

 

 

 To me this is worth so much more because my girlfriend gave it to me for my birth day and she is the one that to the time put the design on it.
