My Name: Judson Carlton Brandenburg

The history behind a name has always interested me whether it be the meaning behind it or how a person got that name. When my parents were thinking about names for me, they were both reading a book about one of the first American missionaries. His name was Adoniram Judson. He dedicated his life to preach to the Burmese people and translated the Bible into their language. Adoniram was known for his tenacity and dedication to his ministry. He was like a lighthouse on the shore sending out a beacon of hope to those in darkness. This biography had such an impact on my parents that they decided to name me after this missionary. They spared me the name Adoniram, and opted for Judson, thankfully. My middle name was given to me because I shared it with my grandfather. My grandfather is one of the hardest workers I have ever known. As a forty year old father of three, he uprooted his family and went back to school while working full time. So like Judson and Carlton, my parents desire for me to live a meaningful life characterized by hard work. Yes. Something like Judson Carlton will do.

  1. Hello, Judson. My middle name is named after my grandfather. I’m very proud and honored to have the same name. He was also a very hard working man and had three kids of his own, too.

  2. Parents often times pass down names from our grandparents because of the effect that they had on their lives. What type of work did he do?
