Journal 8

A strong comparison between the two passages was how the characters callings’ were inspired by their parents. On page 55,  Dekalb Walcott III has his mind set for college and to ultimately be an attorney. Another mindset for Dekalb was to help his family out. He started as a firefighter to get money, and ended up liking it. He proceeded to follow in his father's footsteps as a firefighter. On page 81, Efraim Ayala was close to her mother before she died. One interest Efraim inherited from her mother was her love for drawing after she was introduced to it. After she mastered the skill, she started to sell her drawings and paintings. She also feels like this career keeps her close to her mother in a way.

A contract between the two are how they got into it. With Dekalb he had a long line of firefighters, but was not interested in it until he needed a job for money. His sole purpose to be a firefighter is to get more financially stable before he plans to go to college. On the other hand, Efraim started this as a genuine passion, and from a younger age. Her calling was more planned out and had more time to develop, while Dekalb was more rushed, settling for whatever job. Developing on that topic more, Efraims’ mindset was just do whatever she enjoyed doing and go with the flow instead of a sudden change of plans.

For Efraim, she connected with her mother well by drawing. For me, I recently started to connect with my grandpa from our similar interest in playing the guitar. During quarantine I wanted something new to do, and I remembered that my grandpa gifted my brother a small junior sized guitar. He never played it, but I decided to give it a try. I received a full sized guitar from him recently; I started to get more serious about it after I learned the basics on the junior guitar. He asks about if I'm learning to play etc, which I am, but I like to learn certain more iconic songs instead of the songs he gave me. All and all, our similar interest in playing the guitar will create a good bond, and I will continue to learn how to play.

This is from a movie spanish teachers love to play in class, so some people should remember Coco. He took his parents or grandparents guitar and started to get good. He played for his grandma once.

  1. Hello Zach, I like the two profiles you picked today. The one thing that I noticed is you said that Dekalb wasn't interested in being a firefighter till he needed money. I took it as he was interested in the job beforehand because he had his dad as a role module for a worker and he found the work interesting. Same as Efraim where she found her passion for drawing because of her mother. Both of these people were inspired from a young age. I notice this a lot with kids in families where the kids tend to go to a similar field as their parents or the complete opposite. Its really interesting to observe when you look at it. Also nice job on this journal.
