Pat Hays was a Chicago Policewoman who had worked for 34 years. She grew up in a bad home and read to pass the time. Before she was a police officer her family pushed her into a marriage too early with the wrong guy. He hit her, abused her and treated her like property. While working on a switchboard her and a friend took the Chicago police women test and passed. There were only 35 women who passed. She mostly worked with youth, Family investigation, abuse and neglect. She noted that men don’t want to work with women or children and she stated, “ I wanted to be somebody who was warm and who you could sit and feel comfortable talking to” (Isay 158). She Connected to people with her experience of being abused and her literary readings to help comfort people who are experiencing a crisis. She stopped her children from joining the force because of pressure it would put on them. She retired in 2001 and said, “ I really enjoyed helping people. I would have done it forever” (Isay 161). I think it’s Incredible for someone who has been in abuse to choose a hard career as a police officer to help others. She didn’t want her children to be police Officers because of the job on your mental and physical health.
According to James Israelsen, Associate writer for factretriever stated, “the first ever known female police officer Marie Owens Was in chicago in the 1890”(James Israelsen). James Also states that, “twelve Percent OF the Law enforcement Officers in The United States are female”(James Israelsen. It really surprised me how few officers have been added to the police force considering how much the population has risen. I don’t think we should force police women to join, but I just find it interesting that it hasn’t risen with the rest of the population and is not related to the overall population of Women.
(here is a picture of Marie Ownes, The first known policewomen in the United States. Was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada the daughter of Irish immigrants.)
Hey Angelo! I was wondering if Marie Owens was on a special task force like Pat Hays? Because as we found out in the profile, Pat specialized in a lot domestic calls.
