Research Response Exercise 

     The story I will be writing about is “Lillie Cotlon, 70, Talks With Her Son And Business Partner, Burnell Cotlon, 47, A Grocer.” There are many of reasons and influences that led to Burnell learning his passion of being a Grocer. Lillie knew her son was going to be an entrepreneur one day because he would buy candy then sell it at school. ( Isay 148). Burnell and his mom lived in the Ninth Ward, it was a small town with no store in it. The closest store was in another city which you would have to take three buses to get to. ( Isay 149). That’s when Burnell decided to buy the old barbershop and transform it to a local grocery store. ( Isay 150). After Burnell opened the store, the town was so happy. They felt like the town was coming back. ( Isay 151). That’s what kept Burnell motivated, he liked how his store was making a difference in his town. ( Isay 151). Barenell stated, “If they have a car, that means they choose to come here. That means we’re doing something right.” ( Isay 152) This is my favorite quote because you can just visualize that, he is saying this with a smile on his face. That is something to be proud of and he is turning his dream into a reality.

     I did research on Burnell’s store, I wanted to know if it was still open and the name of it. The name of the store is Burnell’s Lower 9th Ward Market and the store is still currently opened. In the article I read, Burnell said, “When you get your money, come back and pay me.” That is truly awesome that Burnell is doing that for people indeed during this pandemic. Not many grocery stores would give away free stuff and hope you come back and pay for it.
