Journal Eight

Today we will be comparing two of the chapters we’ve read so far in Callings. Out of all of the chapters I would like to compare chapter 4 about Marat Kogut, NBA Referee, and Larry and Laura Michaelis, Physicians. Between the two of them I feel like they are both great chapters. They both talk about people pushing for their passions and were doing them from pretty early on. For Marat he was volunteering to be a referee when he got hurt and found his passion from then, and Laura was inspired by her dad and would watch him at work. In both of these cases they started at young ages in their passions.

But within both of these stories they also have things that aren’t the same. Marat was a guy who wanted action, he wanted to be a part of the whole game as a whole. Larry and Laura were different. They didn’t want to go through as many people as possible and get everyone in and out as fast as possible. They wanted to enjoy their jobs and get to really know the people they were working with. They wanted to take a slower pace compared to Marat’s fast pace.

Lastly I can really sympathize with Larry and Laura in how they work. I feel so much better about work if I can get to know the people I’m helping. Because I work at the pharmacy at Walmart as a tech I realize that every person can just seem like a number. But if you take time to get to know the people it makes you feel more accomplished and I feel like it helps the customers know that you are always trying to help them out as much as you are able to do. Larry says it best when he states, “I love to be with people, I love conversation; that's what keeps me going. And so I spend a lot of time trying to get to know my patients instead of just  operating on them.” (Isay 870).

Any and all Walmart’s remind me of
work at the pharmacy, and a lot of good and
bad memories.

  1. I liked the NBA referee chapter a lot too, because it showed that your dream can become true, you just need to persuade and believe in them.

  2. Hello, David! I ,also, enjoyed reading the NBA referee chapter. I liked how his dad was very proud and supportive the whole time. Also, I liked how he didn’t want to be a doctor or lawyer because there was so many of them. I like your outlook of trying to connect with your customers, I find that really neat.
