Journal Four
One major theme in chapter ten of One and Done by Maurice Clarett, is betrayal. This theme is portrayed many ways throughout the story. In the story, an Ohio State employee, Andy Geiger betrayed Clarett by starting an investigation into how he got money to buy all of the CD’s in his car. Clarett told them that they weren’t his CD’s and that they belonged to the person he bought the car off of ( Clarett 154). They continued to investigate him, charged him and took away all of the help they had been giving him in school. They betrayed Clarett by letting him help win the championship then kicking him out of the program. Another theme in this chapter is persistence. After all of this they had put Clarett through, he still re-enrolled into classes at Ohio State and tried to play football again too (Clarett 161). Obviously, football didn’t work out for him because Geiger wouldn’t let that happen.
The writing is at its best at the end of the chapter when Clarett leads us back into his darkness that he thought he had escaped from. Right when he stopped playing football, he became depressed and begun hustling again (Clarett 162). This really made me feel how he felt during that time and it helps the reader know how much of an effect football had on him.
My cousins and sister had the most influence on me as a teen. I am the youngest in my family and was always dropped off at my grandmas house with my cousins. As the youngest, I always wanted to be like the older girls so I did everything they did and learned from them. This was a positive influence because it taught me how to grow up faster than others and they taught me things I needed to know about being an adult. I still go to them today if I need help with things. This relates to how Clarett grew up with his brothers and cousins at his grandmas house as well.
I agree that Clarett's writing was at his best on page 162 as well. My family always played an important role on my life as well. Typically your family has your best interest at heart so I find it easier to learn from them.
ReplyDeleteHey Alayna, I relate to look up to sisters and cousins, my cousin she took care of me when my parents were at work, she taught me to be tough and many other things.
ReplyDeleteI'm the youngest in my family too and my parents did the same thing. They would drop me off at my grandparents house and I would hang with my cousins. I learned how to adult too which really helped when I got a job. I feel cousins and grandparents help mature someone faster because they've been through a lot more and different kinds of situations.
