Someone I know personally that has the most passion and dedication in their work is my high school study hall teacher. She always went above and beyond to make sure I always had a smile on my face and made sure I at least had three real laughs before I left her classroom. She did that for a lot of her students too. She wasn't just that study hall teacher that sat there and played on her phone or was on the computer all the time. She tried to connect with her students and create relationships. To me she has made a huge impact in my life and I'm sure she did the same for many other students too. She started out being an elementary teacher and would tell all her funny stories of how bizarre little kids are. She then just got tired of little kids because she didn't feel like they appreciated her so she went to high school. She appreciates high school students a little more because most of us appreciated her and what all she did for us.
In the introduction of Callings it helped illuminate the stories of those who figured out what they were destined for. It is also to show that hard work is needed to become what you want and that it's not gonna happen over night. I learned that there are a lot more people in this world that actually likes their job and doesn't dread it like most of us because they found something they love.
My favorite profile so far, even though it is in the introduction is Austin Chen. She is described to be very dedicated to her work, "I knew that she had made the commitment to personally deliver the babies of every single one of her patients, which meant she was on call twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. She told me the she had tried to leave town only once in the twelve years since she'd started her practice, to say good-bye to her father, who was dying. But while she was there, a patient called to say she was in labor. Dr. Chen left so she could meet her patient at the hospital. She was not able to be with her dad when he died" (Isay 1-2). That's a hard thing to do. Back in December, my grandfather (my dads, dad) was in the hospital and my dad came home because he was super tired and needed to eat. When he came home and took a nap he got a phone call saying that he passed and he was extremely devastated he wasn't there with him during his last moments. So the dedication that Dr. Chen has for her patients is impeccable with the fact that she left saying goodbye to her father while he was dying to help a patient out.

I loved that you had a teacher that impacted you like that! I also wrote about one of my teachers who was a lot like that. I think its very rare especially for teachers to truly love their job and have that kind of an impact on their students.
ReplyDeleteI lived a similar situation as your father did when his father pass away. When my grandfather passed away we were in vacation when my dad received the call, and like your he was devastated. I completely agree, that is impressive Dr. Chen commitment to her patience.
