Journal 5 - Berger

The Lanyard was my favorite poem because it was joking the whole way through. The main reason that I don’t generally like poems is that they are too serious or deep, I like to read for the enjoyment of what I’m reading. I related to this poem the most as well, like the line “I was ricocheting slowly off the blue walls of this room”(line 1-2 Collins). This is exactly something that I do when I’m bored, just kinda wander around till I find something. I also really like the way he used “ricocheting” because it not normally how I would use that word but it makes sense the way he uses it. The tone that the author uses is joking and sarcastic in a good way. A theme for this poem is, sometimes looking to the past is the only way to know somethings worth.

The monkey garden is one of the chapters that stuck out to me. Throughout the book, the themes and events of the book have been getting more serious and adult-like, but in this chapter it the change is palpable. This chapter talks about how Esperanza is having a hard time fitting into her age group this pushes to be by herself and for her to feel suicidal. Some of the good writing of this chapter was her description of the garden its self, like “the sleepy smell of rotting wood”(Cisneros 95). This just give such an environment, is quiet was deep earthy smell.

I would have done a picture of my friends but I could find any. This my '68 Camaro about a year ago, it something that I have been working with my dad and sometimes friends. I may have talked about once or twice so far but depending on what we are going to write it may come up more because it has shaped a lot of what Ive done all thought high school and even now because its not all the way done.

  1. Hey Michael, I think '68 Camaros are beautiful cars and I'd love to hear more about your project with it. Also, I agree with you on the arguments in the book getting more adult-like and I think the chapter "the Monkey Garden" is a point of revolution in the book for Esmeralda because she realizes she is not a kid no more.
