Journal Seven: Callings Connections

For me I would say my mom has the most passion out of all the people I know in their job. When I was younger she used to make candles for herself then later on started making it into something she could make money. She has been doing this for almost 8 years and started at markets trying to get frequent customers to sell them at stores and shipping them to stores. Personally I feel like my mom kept with her business because it made her feel happy. She was her own boss and she made the decisions on what was going on all of the time. On top of that she just enjoys the work and loves to see how far she can get with something she makes with her own two hands.

My mom really reminded me about the people in the first couple chapters of Callings where we get people who are unhappy with their jobs and switch to a passion. They choose a profession not on how much money they can make, but on how much they enjoy it. Even if that means they are a bridgetender or a NBA referee. The people in this book love what they do and how they do it so they choose that even if it means that they get bad benefits or bad money, but in the end they are happy with their life and no one can change that.

Out of all of the people we learned about up to until now I enjoyed Barbara Abelhauser the most. She was a woman who worked as a state employee and hated it. As she was going through life bridge tending got into her head and she imagined how bliss it would be to have that job. She later quit her other job for bridge tending and loves it. She says “The pay’s horrible, the benefits are worse, but the job itself is great. I love it.” (Isay 18). She wanted a bliss job, a job where she could have an amazing view, a job where she could live her life with no regret. That's how my mom thinks too.

My mom makes a similar looking candle in that exact tin.
It just inspires me to see one of my parents doing a job
they enjoy because that means I can get the same thing too.

  1. Hello, David! I find it interesting that you also did your mom as the most passionate person you know. My mom also has extreme passion for what she does. Do you ever help your mom make the candles? For me I sometimes help do paperwork for my mom when she gets really busy. Whats the name of her business?

  2. That's really cool your mom created her own business with candles. That's super impressive because starting something like that takes a lot of hard work and dedication. Especially doing all that and raising kids is inspiring.

  3. Hey, David the way you write about your mother reminds me of the first chapter in the book where the street astronomer found something he enjoyed doing and then later turned it into his job.
