Journal Four by Isaac Swert
In chapter 10 of One and Done there were a few important themes throughout the chapter. One important theme is racism. Clarett worked himself very hard to be a star athlete and then the NCAA and Andy Geiger tried their hardest to prevent Clarett from playing again. Clarett even says “This is when Jim Brown was like screw you too and called Andy Geiger a slave master because he was acting like he owned my ass and could whip me himself or have me whipped by the NCAA”(Clarett 156). This is how he was treated during the trials; he was never given a fair shot. Another important theme is that your past follows you. The NCAA and Andy Geiger were never trying to help him because they just saw him as a hoodrat. Clarett even brings light to this when he says “Yo, you’re not trying to save this kid from the streets---you’re trying to kick him back out onto the streets”(Clarett 156). I thought the writing was the best on page 159 because it talks about his process of trying to get back on the football team even though the odds are against him. This creates a sense of hope for the reader and pulls you in deeper. It also helps you sympathize for him and it puts you on Claretts side during the trials.
In my life, a man named Paul Maynard the Third, or Trey as he likes to go by, was a very big influence on me. I met him during my first job and he became a close friend of mine because he took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. But he didn’t just show me the ropes at work, he also gave me pointers at school and life and even technological help. He has helped me have an appreciation for grammatical structures and vocabulary because he is very strict in those areas. He has also taught me to check the facts of what I am saying by constantly questioning me about the information I share to him.

I completely agree with Andy Geiger and the NCAA are using him for his athletic performance to win while still keeping him down because of where he group and who he is.
ReplyDeleteI find it interesting that you used the quote, “This is when Jim Brown was like screw you too and called Andy Geiger a slave master because he was acting like he owned my ass and could whip me himself or have me whipped by the NCAA”(Clarett 156), from the book for racism. I looked at that quote was prefect. The fact that they put this in the book puts so much into it. For one it's portraying Clarett as a slave because he's black. He believes this was one of the biggest reasons why Geiger treated him that way. However its also about class because they are comparing a kid who grew up in the hood to being someone as worthless as a slave. Overall I liked the quote you chose for that.
