One and done by Maurice Clarett was one of the books that captured my attention the most. The book has a lot of meanings that it carries through. One of the biggest one was redemption. Clarett went from being one of the most famous football players in Ohio, to go to prison for seven years. However, with his wiliness to change his life around he came out of prison and built a new life for himself. This showed me, it doesn’t matter how low you fall in life, because if you are willing to change the mistake you made, with work and wiliness, you can change your life around. For Clarett prison was his redemption, because in jail is where he realized the mistakes he made and the wrong lifestyle he was living. It is in prison where Clarett decided to change his life; he went from drug dealer and a thief to a father, CEO of the RedZone, investor in real estate and author of a book.

When Clarett moved to Ohio State, his goal was to start the first game of the season as a tailback. He was convinced of this and he worked as hard as he could to achieve this goal as he states: “One of the backs, but I forget who it was, said, You know we are deep in running backs. So I was like, I don’t know what you are talking about—I'm coming here to be the starter” (Clarett, 67). Even if some people did not want him to start because he was just a freshman he did not care, he kept working hard until he attain it. This shows his determination on achieving the goal he set on his mind. This though me that most of the times we will attain a goal, if we set it in our minds and we try out best to reach it.

What I took away the most from the zoom call we had with Clarett is; the attitude on how we approach things will make a difference. For example, Clarett told us his routine of how he prepares for the day and how this affects it. He told us that every morning he wakes up around 5:30 a.m. drinks coffee, goes for three miles run to activate his body, then he goes in his office and he meditates for three/four minutes getting everything out of his mind. After this, he gets to work focusing on his goals he has to achieve that day, he succeeds most of the times. If we approach the day with a lame attitude, we will not be able to achieve as many goals as someone that approaches his day with an active and focus attitude.

  1. Redemption was definitely one of the biggest themes in this book. I really like how you said that it showed you how no matter how low you fall in life you have the control to change and fix your wrongs to flip your life around.

  2. I agree with the statement on how our day is immediately set by what we do and feel at the moment. When Clarett said that he reminded me of my uncle who was is in the similar situation with jail time. After hearing him say how he starts his day reminded me of my Tio who does the same routine in the morning and I can see the results in the success they both achieved.
